How To Push Harder When You Want To Stop Your Fitness Regime

By Kya Grace

One of the toughest challenges exercisers face is pushing themselves when they feel that they cannot continue exerting their bodies any longer. If the exercises you perform get monotonous or easy on the body then they cease to be effective as your body gets used to the similar routines. For a fitness regime to be truly efficient, you need to constantly increase the difficulty level of the exercises you perform. When a certain exercise becomes easy to do, your body adapts itself to it. Hence, learning to push yourself when you feel like you cannot perform even a single more rep is crucial in building a lean and fit physique. Following are some ideas that should help in this regard.

Push on no matter what – Before starting, take a personal oath regarding how many reps of a certain exercise you want to perform and stick to it. When you feel like you cannot continue any further, recall your oath and concentrate your focus on the task at hand.

Bargain with yourself – Tell yourself that if you keep going, you will allow yourself that pastry or that slice of cake in the evening.

Avoid negativity – Shift your attention away from negative thoughts or how bad you feel; instead focus on the positives. Remind yourself that if you do go on to complete the required number of repetitions, it is you who will benefit in the long run and end up with a lean and fit body.

Don’t let your mind wander – Keep a laser sharp focus on the exercise that you’re doing instead of paying attention to the surrounding environment. Not only will you perform the exercise more efficiently, but it’ll also be over and done with in lesser time.

Shaming yourself – Tell yourself that if you do not complete the required set then it will bother you the entire day that you couldn’t finish such a small number of repetitions. Privately embarrassing yourself in this way can help you across the finish line.

Bribe yourself – Imagine that if you complete your regime, you’ll get that long awaited promotion, or that gadget you’ve long wanted or anything else that you really desire. Conversely, you could tell yourself that if you don’t finish, you’ll be deprived of all that you wish to have.

Imagine you’re competing with someone else – Conjure up a fictional competitor (perhaps a personal rival from work) and tell yourself that if you don’t finish, you’ll lose the contest.

As silly as some of these methods seem, in those few seconds when you appear to be up against a wall and there seems no way you can push past it, these apparently trivial tricks can be the difference between quitting half way through and keeping a personal promise and finishing the routine. As already mentioned, change should be the only constant in your daily fitness routine and learning how to regularly challenge and push yourself through progressively more difficult fitness regimes can be the difference between being stuck on a weight-loss plateau and achieving the physique that you desire.
